### Overview  
  
This dataset shows national-level electricity generation from renewable energy technologies between 2000 and 2018. Renewable energy generation measures the amount of electricity actually produced by renewable energy sources. Renewable energy is defined as energy that comes from natural resources that are continually restored. In this dataset, renewable energy sources include wind, solar, hydropower, biofuels, municipal waste, biogas, geothermal, and marine energy. 
  
  

Transitioning to renewable energy technologies can be beneficial to the economy and human health, as well as help reduce climate change. Electricity generation is one of the largest [sources of greenhouse gas emissions](https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions), directly contributing to climate change. Transitioning to renewable energy technologies can help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and be part of the solution to addressing climate change. Renewable energy production also produces less air pollution, which is linked to a number of health concerns, than most fossil fuel energy sources. Furthermore, these technologies provide a reliable source of energy and help diversify energy portfolios, reducing the potential of energy scarcity. 
  
  

This dataset was produced by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and is updated annually.  
  
### Methodology  
  
Data was obtained from a variety of sources, including an IRENA questionnaire, official national statistics, industry association reports, consultant reports and news articles.
