The CO₂ Emissions Comparison for Transit Buses was developed by World Resources Institute (WRI) using emission factors for grid electricity from Ecometrica, fuel combustion emissions data from International Energy Agency 2012 and 2013(IEA), electric power transmission and distribution loss data from the World Bank Group's World Development Indicators, and purchased electricity values from Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP).   
  
The climate change impacts of electric vehicles (EV) vary globally depending on the fuel used to power the electric grid. EVs are increasingly becoming a better choice as electric grids improve efficiency and integrate more renewable energy sources. While the efficiency of the vehicle has a large impact on the operational costs, social benefits, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, it is important to understand the energy mix from your local energy grid – as there is significant variation within countries.   
  
The data represents the ratio of CO₂ emissions from electric and diesel buses. The purpose of the data is to compare the GHG emissions of the EV and typical ICE diesel bus for the years 1990-2012 on a national level. Where the interactive Resource Watch global map is green, the emissions from the EV are lower, based on the national average energy grid, compared to the emissions from the typical ICE diesel bus. Where the interactive Resource Watch global map is red, the emissions from the EV are higher, based on the national average energy grid, compared to the emissions from the typical ICE diesel bus.
