### Overview  
  
The Crop Allocation to Food, Feed, Nonfood dataset shows how crops are used around the world. The dataset also shows calorie production per what fraction of global crop production actually becomes food. This data shows how many kilocalories of food, feed, and nonfood are produced by 41 crops combined. Food includes all kilocalories used for human consumption, feed includes those used for animal feed, and nonfood includes those used for biofuels and other industrial uses. Worldwide demand for crops is increasing rapidly due to global population growth, increased biofuel production, and changing dietary preferences. Meeting these growing demands will be a substantial challenge that will tax the capability of the food system and prompt calls to dramatically boost global crop production. However, to increase food availability, we may also consider how the world’s crops are allocated to different uses and whether it is possible to feed more people with current levels of crop production.
 
  
  
This data was developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota. It reflects the production and use of 41 crops combined, circa 2000. The spatial resolution of the data is five arc minutes by five arc minutes (~10 km x 10 km at the equator).
  
  
### Methodology  
  
Crop-specific uses for 41 crops were estimated based on the Food Balance Sheets (FAOstat.org) produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which provide national-level statistics. This data uses a global compilation of census data and satellite images to depict geographic patterns of crop area and yields across the world on a 5′ × 5′ latitude–longitude grid (equivalent to roughly 9 km × 9 km on the equator).
