### Overview  
  
The Fishery Production dataset on Resource Watch shows annual time series data of national aquaculture, capture, and total fishery production beginning in 1950. The data displayed cover capture fishery production related to catch of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic animals taken for commercial, industrial, recreational and subsistence purposes from inland, brackish and marine waters. The data also cover aquaculture fishery production related to the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants. Quantities are given in metric tons (=1000 kg).

  
  
The fisheries and aquaculture sector contributes significantly to food security and nutrition, especially in some of the world’s most food-limited regions, while simultaneously supporting the livelihood of hundreds of millions of people around the world. It is critical to ensure fisheries are managed responsibly and sustainably around the world. This requires standardized, reliable and up-to-date information on fishery production and supply chain, as well as the consideration of social and economic aspects, for making sound policy and assessing the performance of responsible fisheries and aquaculture management systems. Furthermore, timely, trustworthy data are crucial for demonstrating progress towards the [2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development](https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/development-agenda/). 

  
  
Attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will require a solid framework of indicators and statistical data to monitor progress, inform policy and ensure accountability of all stakeholders. The FAO works to achieve food security for all, and as the custodian agency of four indicators under SDG14, the FAO has an obligation to accelerate the global momentum to secure healthy and productive oceans. Underpinning these efforts is the need to rely on high quality national, regional and global statistics, while ensuring these data are freely accessible to all. To meet this need, the FAO provides the only source of global statistics on capture fisheries and aquaculture production—a unique global asset for sector analysis and monitoring.
  
  
### Methodology  
  
Data on Fisheries and Aquaculture Production are sourced annually from relevant national offices concerned with fishery statistics. Information is collected by means of a system of standardized forms, which list for each country the relative species items and fishing areas breakdown. In the case of some "aquatic products," data are also obtained from trade associations or other specialized international organizations to which data are also submitted. In this way the statistics are reviewed by subject matter specialists. Data concerning the nominal catch of certain major groups are generally reviewed in collaboration with the regional agency concerned. For example, data on tuna provided by the national correspondents are often replaced by the "best scientific estimates" produced by regional bodies collecting tuna catch statistics.         

  
  
For the period 1950–1995, capture and aquaculture were compiled together in the total production statistics. However, capture and aquaculture production quantities have since been extended back to 1950. Capture data relate to the nominal catches of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic mammals, other aquatic animals, residues (used for fishmeal and fish oil production) and plants. Catches from capture production are taken for commercial, industrial, recreational and subsistence purposes from inland, brackish and marine waters. Data include all quantities caught and landed for both food and feed purposes but exclude discards. Aquaculture data relate to the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants. Farming implies some form of intervention in the rearing process to enhance production, such as regular stocking, feeding, protection from predators, etc. Farming also implies individual or corporate ownership of the stock being cultivated. For statistical purposes, aquatic organisms which are harvested by an individual or corporate body which has owned them throughout their rearing period contribute to aquaculture while aquatic organisms which are exploitable by the public as a common property resource, with or without appropriate licenses, are the harvest of fisheries.

  
  
Catches of fish, crustaceans and molluscs are expressed in live weight, that is, the nominal weight of the aquatic organisms at the time of capture. The harvest of aquatic plants is given in wet weight. Data are given in metric tons (=1000 kg), except those for whales, seals and crocodiles, which are given in numbers.
