Plastic density in the oceans
Count and weight of plastic pollution floating in the world’s oceans for 2007-2013
Caution: The authors stress that their estimates are highly conservative, and may be considered minimum estimates. Their estimates of macroplastic are based on a limited number of observations and tests. Observational surveys are based on human observation and are at risk of human error. Particles that are dark in color, small, or partial submerged can be very challenging to see and correctly record. Additionally, the tests do not account for plastic present on shorelines, on the seabed, suspended in the water column, and within organisms. Furthermore, plastic does not always stay on the sea surface permanently, but is often stranded on coastlines or resting on sediment.
