### Overview  
  
The Aqueduct Riverine Flood Hazard dataset shows the projected inundation depth for river basins around the world, in a business as usual climate scenario. In this dataset, the inundation depth represents the depth of water over normally dry ground that would occur during 100-year floods. Inundation depths are calculated for the baseline year 2010 and predicted for future years 2030, 2050, and 2080. The dataset has a spatial resolution of 30 arc seconds, which is approximately 1 km x 1 km at the equator but [changes with distance](https://www.thoughtco.com/degree-of-latitude-and-longitude-distance-4070616) from the equator.

  
  
Flooding is likely to intensify in the coming decades due to climate change. It is among the most serious of all global risks, causing loss of life and damage to property, livelihoods, and economies. As urbanization and economic growth put more people and assets into flood-prone areas, it is important to calculate flood risks and hazards around the world. However, these hazards are usually underestimated due to lack of data and information. This dataset helps change that by providing high resolution inundation depth data.

  
  
The Aqueduct Riverine Flood Hazard dataset was created by the World Resource Institute (WRI) to assist in creating water use policies and assessing flood risks. This dataset is part of WRI’s Aqueduct datasets. Aqueduct helps to identify and evaluate water risks around the world.  
  
### Methodology  
  
The Aqueduct Riverine Flood Hazard dataset was created using a Global Flood Risk with
IMAGE Scenarios (GLOFRIS) framework. GLOFRIS combines a global hydrological model called PCRaster Global Water Balance (PCR-GLOBWB) with river and floodplain routing scheme to make long-term simulations of river discharges and flood levels for a variety of climate conditions. In addition, meteorological datasets from European Water and Global Change (EUWATCH) were used to force PCR-GLOBWB over various time periods. Floodplain water volumes were then calculated using the PCR-GLOBWB outputs for a 2010 baseline, along with future climate scenarios in 2030, 2050, and 2080. The output flood volumes were converted to high resolution inundation maps using a volume spreading flood model.

  
  
The “Riverine” hazard represents flooding from river overflow and occurs in river basins with an area of at least 10,000 kilometers squared. However, smaller floods do occur more regularly than larger floods. The data on Resource Watch shows what a 100-year flood (1% probability of occurrence per year) will look like for the selected years (2030, 2050, and 2080).
